Voting is Not Enough

Below is a letter from Solidarity Winnipeg in advance of the April 19 elections. We encourage you to attend our April 5 event, Voting is Not Enough.

Together we can do all sorts of things we can’t do on our own.

The threat of harsh austerity from a new provincial government is on the horizon. The federal Liberal government is doing many things the same as the Conservatives. Winnipeg city council is dominated by right-wing politicians. The owners and CEOs of companies only care about their profits. The rights of Indigenous Peoples continue to be denied. Not enough is being done to stop climate change.

These are just some of the issues facing the great number of us who do not hold real power in our society. How do we begin to push back on all these attacks?

Voting is not enough. It takes serious struggle to make a better world.

Good ideas are important, but they're not enough. Many people are needed to put good ideas into action.

Winnipeg has many such people. But right now there aren't nearly enough strong organizers to build an effective fight-back.

We need more people with the skills, confidence and commitment to mobilize people for change. These people are needed on the ground in communities, in workplaces and on campuses. They are needed to contribute in all kinds of ways. All roles are important when it comes to building movements that can win.

Those of us who have gathered to start Solidarity Winnipeg are committed to building such movements. We believe that times are tough and the stakes are high – and that they have been for some time. As Naomi Klein has stated, “There are no non-radical options left before us.”

We want to connect with like-minded people already doing social justice work or working to strengthen their unions. If you aren't already connected with community or union activism and you agree with the ideas we're sharing, we want to meet you, too.

Whether it's to share ideas, learn new skills or meet people involved in different efforts to make change, Solidarity Winnipeg can help unite the fighting left in our city.

We invite you to join us, to share your voice, your skills and your ideas for a better world here at home.

Together we can do all sorts of things we can’t do on our own. Together we can organize. Together we can use our resources and creativity to build the power we need to make the change we want to see.
